Abel graduated

On October 3rd, Abel van der Vies successfully defended his thesis: “Scalable Brillouin spectrum engineering in Thin-Film Lithium Niobate”.

Abel addressed a significant challenge in microwave photonics by leveraging the crystalline structure of TFLN waveguides to develop customizable Brillouin filters.

Congratulations and good luck in your future career, Abel!

Job graduated

On October 2nd, Job Noordkamp successfully defended his Master’s thesis: “Integrated Stimulated Brillouin Laser in Foundry Silicon Nitride”.

During his time with the group, Job achieved a major breakthrough by realizing the Brillouin laser and comb on silicon nitride photonic circuits—a long-standing goal of our research. His contributions to the group were remarkable!

We wish you the best of luck with your next steps, Job!

MESA+ Day

We were delighted to participate in the 2025 MESA+ Meeting, which celebrated the institution’s 25th anniversary. As in previous years, we actively contributed by sharing our most recent scientific results.

The meeting featured several key contributions from our group: Yvan delivered a compelling talk focusing on Brillouin microwave photonic filters for security applications. Furthermore, during the poster session, Steven and Kees presented our recent work and roadmap on scalable TFLN photonics technologies, and Randy demonstrated Brillouin amplifiers and lasers in silicon nitride photonics.

We are extremely proud that, in the poster competition, Randy won the ‘Best Poster’ prize among nearly 70 attendees. Congratulations, Randy, on this outstanding achievement!

New paper in Laser & Photonics Reviews

We are happy to share our recent work in Laser & Photonics Reviews: ‘Integrated RF Photonic Front-End Capable of Simultaneous Cascaded Functions’ .

In this study, we demonstrate a compact photonic architecture that handles multiple RF processing tasks simultaneously, paving the way for more efficient and compact RF photonic systems.

Congrats, Steven and the team!

New publication in Science Advances

We are pleased to announce that our study, ‘Integrated Brillouin photonics in thin-film lithium niobate,’ was published in Science Advances in April.

In this paper, we demonstrate strong stimulated Brillouin scattering on the thin-film lithium niobate platform. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, we realized net-gain Brillouin amplifiers, generated a stimulated Brillouin laser, and devised a multifunctional Brillouin-based MWP processor, all within the standard TFLN platform.

Congratulations, Steven and the team!

New publication in Nature Communications

We are pleased to share our latest microwave photonics paper published at Nature Communications, titled “Programmable multifunctional integrated microwave photonic circuit on thin-film lithium niobate”.

In this paper, we developed a high-performance programmable photonic chip based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN), enabling multifunctional microwave photonic signal processing on a single chip.

Congrats, Chuangchuang and the team!

New paper in APL Photonics

We are proud to share our recent work, “Stimulated Brillouin scattering in a non-suspended ultra-low-loss thick SOI platform,” has been published as a Featured Article in APL Photonics!

For years, Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in silicon photonics has been primarily explored in suspended SOI platforms, due to acoustic leakage in standard silicon nanowire structures. In this work, we overcome this long-standing challenge by demonstrating that increasing the waveguide dimension can effectively confine optically generated sound waves without suspension.

Congrats, Steven!

Roadmapping day 2025

We kicked off the year with a full day of roadmapping.

We shared a lot of ideas about new experiments for the following year.

Beside science and tech, we also discussed potential commercialization plans, joined by Dr. Lennart de Vreede from the Strategic Business Development & MESA+, University of Twente.

New publication in Optics Express

We are pleased to share a new publication of our paper at Optics Express, titled “RF photonic interference mitigation system using silicon nitride ring resonator network”.

This work was conducted by Maarten as part of his master project. Congrats, Maarten, on this well-deserved achievement!
